Tonight's pondering

Tonight's pondering

Why do we call it 'The Ukraine' and not 'Ukraine'?

We have an idea it might be related to either
A) what they call themselves (c.f. The Netherlands); or
B) relating to a geographical feature (c.f. The Congo)

but we don't know.

Anyone? (I think James, Trev thinks Jim)

Dear Trevor and Gemma
Many thanks for the train picture - it looks to be preserved, no longer active. When was steam power withdrawn in Turkey?
Ukraine/The Ukraine - does this help? http://www.infoukes.com/faq/the_ukraine/
In haste, so lots of love to you both, Jim.

I, and I'm sure others in the family, have long suspected that you've not read all your extensive library of train books. You have a book about Turkish steam trains! 'Covering my tracks' or somesuch... I think steam 'engines' (in case Prof. Pedant is reading) were withdrawn mid-80s or so, from memory. Love, Trev.

but you should have more competitions. Particularly ones with prizes. And where only people called "James Cotton" get to enter. Preferably with questions about animals or phylogenetics. Preferably both.
